About: Policy
(updated: 29. June 2020)
Preamble
The HZI OpenRepository is maintained by the HZI library to allow free access to publications of HZI (incl. its branches) to other scientists and the interested public worldwide. The HZI Library has undertaken the task of ingesting, indexing, enriching and making publications and its metadata available in collections related to each of the scientific groups of the centres.
Technical Background
The repository (listed as entry ID/1146/ in the directory of Open Access repositories) is operated by DSPACE and hosted by Atmire. The metadata of each publication is described in DublinCore-terms.
Covered content
The HZI Repository contains published articles (as well as supplemental data) of scientists of the Helmholtz Centre of Infection Research (HZI), and its branches
- Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), Saarbücken
- Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based infection Research (HIRI), Würzburg
- Braunschweig Integrated Centre of Systems Biology (BRICS), Braunschweig
- Centre for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research (Twincore), Hannover
- Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine (CIIM), Hannover
- Study Centre Hannover and
- Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB), Hamburg.
Be aware that not all publications of HZI scientists are represented in this HZI Open Repository immediately due to embargo times insisted upon by the publisher as well as lack of submitted manuscripts. You can find the complete list of publications in the HZI Publication database. The HZI Open Repository and the HZI Publication Database are run as full service units (maintained by HZI Library) for scientists of the above-mentioned centres.
Benefits of HZI Repositiry:
- Integration of HZI publications into search engines and databases (e.g. Google/GoogleScholar, OpenAIRE, OpenDOAR, BASE etc.) via supply of metadata and full texts = more visibility
- compliant to Horizon2020 and DINI repository standards = better interoperability
- via deposit in HZI Repository your publication is funder-compliant
- release of access barriers (no pay per view) = access for all
- if a publication is still embargoed it is accessible via "request a copy"-button = access for all
The HZI library’s workflow
After getting informed about recently published articles designated library staff checks the copyright and archiving conditions for each journal/publisher of the published articles of associated scientists using different tools (e.g. SherpaRoMEO, Directory of Open Access-Journals/ DOAJ, Scopus, PubMed).
Whenever possible the repository’s administrator (HZI Library) archives the original PDF from Open Access journals or publishers preferring the archiving of their edited product. In all other cases we request the final submitted manuscript (post-print) from the corresponding author:
=> Please have a look regarding Publishing in a Journal (OpenAccess-Journal preferred):
OA-approach (suggested Publishing approach describing each step)
Open Access (details on OpenAccess types, OpenAccess-Benefits and how those OpenAccess types are fostered by HZI Library)
To ensure the long-term preservation of the items we include and meet quality standards e.g. via adding the publications in PDF/A-1. Furthermore HZI Library, the repository’s administrator, adds additional metadata (e.g. Pubmed-ID, author-ID e.g. ORCID-id) via a metadata entry mask and links the repository’s currently inserted item to the publisher via DOI and as well as to the research group.
Re-use content, full texts and supplements under the terms of CC BY-NC 4.0
The content, full texts as well as supplements, is protected by the Creative Commons license CC BY-NC 4.0 requesting a mention of the work’s primary creator and prohibits commercial use. This should allow the widest possible Re-use of all materials including the use in remixes and mashups.
Request a copy (/Download-button with padlock-icon)
If material is still under an embargo there is the possibility to request a private copy.
Re-use metadata under the terms of CC0 1.0 Universal
The metadata in the HZI Open Repository is protected by Creative Commons license CC0 1.0 Universal
For intentions to reuse metadata commercially or other questions and comments please contact the HZI library.
Continuing Advancements
The HZI Open Repository administrators make every efforts to stay informed about and integrate new functions into the user interface as soon as technically possible. So we have recently registered the HZI Open Repository as an OpenAIRE data source.
Since May 2015 the HZI Open Repository is harvested by OpenAIRE which means that metadata are enriched with project data from the EU granting periods FP7 and Horizon 2020. Thus, it is possible to limit the publications of HZI to specific funders, e.g. European Commission

Furthermore, we integrated a field for adding an ORCID identifier in order to increase the search functionality. Additionally, we are in the process of integrating ORCID identifiers for our institutional researchers (if available and we are informed about the specific ORCID identifier => so, please tell us your ORCID-id if that is not added here in HZI OpenRepository to your publications until now).
For intentions to reuse metadata commercially or other questions and comments (e.g. telling us your ORCID identifier) please contact us, the HZI library.
